Graphic Storytelling: Writer and collector Rodney Schroeter will talk about what it takes to write a script for a comic or graphic novel. Mr. Schroeter is known for his essays on comic artists and pulp fiction writers and was said to have “a real future in comics” by Necronomicon writer Bill Loebs.
Script writing: Nick Brettingen is an 8th grade teacher at Kewaskum Middle School. He is also the author of a mystery novel for children and is co-director of Kewaskum High School’s annual spring play and summer theater. Mr. Brettingen wrote an original play called “Airline” that was performed last spring at Kewaskum High School.
Research for Writing: Got an idea for story or novel but don’t know where to start? Find out how to get the most out of your time with some research and organizational tips and tricks. Session led by Allison Jornlin.

Flash Fiction: Dave Rank, short fiction author and local newspaper editor, discusses “flash fiction”–works of under 1000 words–and allows participants to write their own flash fiction. Mr. Rank, who has described his work as weird and dark, will be published in an upcoming issue of the webzine Apollo’s Lyre.
Poetry: Write your own poem and learn about the importance of simile and metaphor with poet Jane Osypowski. Ms. Osypowski is a member of numerous Wisconsin writer’s groups including the Wisconsin Fellowhip of Poets and the Wisconsin Regional Writers Association. Her poems have been published all around Wisconsin and she is part of the Fireside Poets in West Bend. Along with Dave Rank, Jane Osypowski is one of the founders of the Moraine Writer’s Guild.
Publishing: Want to get published? Join local writer Lisa Lickel as she leads a discussion on how to prepare a manuscript for publication.

Digital Storytelling: In preparation for the Kewaskum Short Film Festival in May 2009, Kewaskum High School teacher Jane Lazarevic will teach participants how to create a digital storyboard. This special session will be hands-on in the computer lab of Rose Library.
Pulp Fiction: H.P. Lovecraft, Robert Howard, Edgar Rice Burroughs–all were American pulp writers who defined a genre and let loose the imagination of a generation of readers. Find out more about these and other writers from the days of the pulp magazines.
Oral history: This spring, Kewaskum will be participating in an oral history/local memory project. What is a good way to tell your story? This session, taught by veteran local storyteller Judy Farrow-Busack, is not just for those interested in speaking, but for those who want to find their voice.
